Bled with Vintgar gorge
Bled with its emerald green lake, picture postcard church on a islet, medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke as backdrops, Bled is Slovenias most popular resort and its biggest jewel.
On a clear day you see Stol (2236m) to the northeast and Slovenias highest peak Triglav (2864m), in the distance, and then the bells start ringing from the belfry of the little island church. Its magical!
Vintgar gorge – a wooden walkway built in 1893 hugs the rock walls of the gorge for 1600 m along the Radovna river, crisscrossing the raging torrent four times over rapids, waterfalls and pools before reaching 13m – high Šum Waterfall. Easy walk that is just spectacular.

Ironmongering village Kropa
Delighful little village tucked away in a narrow valley below the Jelovica Plateau. Kropa has been a »workhorse« for centuries , mining iron ore and hammering out the nails and decorative wrought iron that can still be seen in many parts of Slovenia. Today Kropa turned its attention to screws – the Plamen factory is based here – but artisans continue their work, clanging away in the workshop on the village´s single street.
The work of their forebears is evident in ornamental street lamps shaped like birds and dragons, weather vanes and shutters.

Vršič pass in Julian alps
Vršič pass (1611m) area was the scene of fierce fighting during WWI, and a high percentage of the dead lay where they fell (at 1525m there is a military cemetery). Tičarjev dom mountain hut is east of the road just before it begins to drop down the far side. To the west is Mojstrovka (2366m), to the east Prisank (2547m) and to the south the valley of the Soča River points the way to Primorska. A hair raising descent of about 10 km ends just short of the Julius Kugy Monument. Kugy was a pioneer climber and author whose books eulogise the beauty of the Julians Alps.

Bohinj
Bohinj, a larger and much less developed glacial lake, stands in a sharp contrast to Bled. It may not have a romantic little island or a castle looming high on a rocky cliff, but it does have a Triglav itself visible from the lake and a wonderful naturalness that doesnt exist in Bled.
